Roy's Top Ten Search Phrases of 2008

Okay, once again, I've reviewed our Analytics file for my list of the Top 10 search phrases that people used to find us here at Shrink Rap. These are based solely on those I found funny, interesting, or just bizarre.

I have left the Top 10 search phrases from 2006 and 2007, since just listing these will bring them to the top in the following year. That means I have retired "how to worry your psychiatrist", "freud the meerkat", and -- everyone's favorite -- "sex with fish". So, here goes, my favorite Top 10 from the 39,000-odd search phrases used in 2008:

10. how to drive your psychiatrist crazy (this theme seems to be escalating)
9. I dress better than my therapist
8. psychiatry iphone (the 3rd link... not bad... I'm looking for an idea for a great psychiatry iPhone app... if iFart can make $27,000 on Christmas Day, I want a piece of that action!)
7. grunting teenager
6. national duckling month (3rd link again... glad to see we are so relevant)
5. buttered cigarettes ambien
4. why are those old farts laughing in flomax commercials
3. "in treatment" clown joke does this taste funny to you
2. patients as facebook friends (a new ethical issue to tackle in the Annotations)
1. mental health parody bill

Top 10 Shrink Rap Posts from 2008

Here are the Top Ten most viewed posts which were written in 2008. (I'll do a Top Ten ever if folks want it, but this gets skewed because being in the top 10 for 2007 results in even more hits, so it becomes circular.)

#9.  In Treatment: Episode 13....Sophie [724 pageviews] [11 comments]

#7.  Why This Shrink Doesn't Prescribe MAOI's [971 pageviews] [33 comments]

And the Number One most visited Shrink Rap post for 2008 . . .

Top Mental Health Blogs?

I have an upcoming talk to give on blogging as a form of advocacy and education in the mental health field. I'd like to know which psychiatry and mental health blogs (aside from ours, which we know you love the best ;-) you all find the most valuable. Please leave us a comment with your choices and what it is, in particular, that makes them valuable to you. I'll make a list later for everyone and find some way to organize the results.

My Three Shrinks Podcast 40: Happy New Year!

[39] . . . [40] . . . [41] . . . [All]

Happy New Year to all our readers and listeners. We really have our podcast sequence screwed up still. #39 is stuck on an inaccessible, corrupted, encrypted Filevault folder, thanks to Leopard's poor handling of Filevault on installation. I'm working on it. [Edit: #39 is now our BlogTalkRadio interview with Dr. Anonymous. -Roy]  Until then, here is #40, recorded on Dec 30 for release on New Year's Day. Joining us today is a guest psychologist, Barb.

January 1, 2008: #40 Happy New Year!

Topics include:
  • Roy's Leopard Troubles. All is not easy in Mac-land. WARNING: Do NOT install Leopard if you are using Filevault. Turn off your Filevault first (of course, if you have 60GB of files in your Filevault, you will need 60GB of empty hard drive space to decrypt it, not the 5GB which I have).

  • New Year's Resolutions. We all discuss our resolutions (or lack thereof).

  • Top 25 Posts of 2007. Check out the most viewed Shrink Rap posts of 2007.

  • Roy's Favorite Searches of 2007. Also check out Roy's quirky list of top 10 weird and funny Google searches. (Hint: oompaloompas)

  • Hanns-G 28-inch LCD Monitor. Roy got a new monitor. Clink has screen-envy.

  • Q&A: Drug Interactions. Do multiple psychotropic drugs sometimes counteract each other?

  • Q&A: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Long discussion about SAD, lightboxes, melatonin, depression, and suprachiasmatic nucleus.

  • iTunes Reviews. We read some of the 20 reviews we have on iTunes. We are NOT related to the Shrink Rap Radio podcast (which is also very good and worth listening to, but not nearly as entertaining as we are, IMHO.)

The background song is Auld Lang Syne, performed by Knuckle Fingers Joe on the Honky Tonk Piano CD (listen on eMusic).

Find show notes with links at: http://mythreeshrinks.com/. The address to send us your Q&A's is there, as well (mythreeshrinksATgmailDOTcom).

This podcast is available on iTunes (feel free to post a review) or as an RSS feed. You can also listen to or download the .mp3 or the MPEG-4 file from mythreeshrinks.com.
Thank you for listening.

Top 25 Shrink Rap Posts for 2007

Happy New Year!!

Last year at this time, we gave you a Top 25 Posts of 2006 list, so we give you this year's countdown list now. (Yes, I will also do a Roy's Favorite Search Phrases of 2007, like I did last year.)

Last year, our main blog page had 27,809 page views, with 9991 "absolute unique visitors" (we started in April 2006, so last year was not a full year). In 2007, the main page had 70,166 views (173,444 page views for the entire site) and 67,867 absolute unique visitors. Thank you for your interest in Shrink Rap!

Last year our #1 post was Stopping the Scourge of P.E. (my post, as DrivingMissMolly pointed out). This year it is again one of mine, so I am challenging my co-bloggers to out-post me in 2008 (if you can...lol...jk).

The Top 10 Things I Don't Like About Being A Shrink

I'm doing this alone-- my co-bloggers are welcome to post their own-- because finding and then nagging Roy is a full-time job. Still waiting for the carpenter to come put things back after we dragged him out to say why he loves his job.

I love my job, as mentioned below in Who Wants To Be A Psychiatrist. But every thing, every job, every relationship, every new or old endeavor, has it's down side, and so this is to present a more balanced side of what I generally think of as my blessed life.

The Top Ten Things I don't like about being a Shrink:

10. Filling out HCFA forms for Medicare over and over and never knowing why they're rejected.

9. Chronic benzodiazepines. The ones that fell down the sink. Why don't zoloft prescriptions ever run out early?

8. The heating unit in my office is awful. It's loud and the room is always too hot or too cold -- this has persisted after it was replaced with a new and improved unit.

7. Arguing with ClinkShrink about who deserves care and what an illness is.

6. No place to lock my belongings in the clinic where I work so I carry my purse everywhere.

5. Wondering if I'll live through eight psychotherapy sessions in a row when I've forgotten to schedule myself a lunch. Or worse, remembering to schedule a lunch, then only having one patient after that, and the patient right before lunch cancels, leaving me two hours of dead space before the last session.

4. Nonsensical paperwork in the clinic.

3. The work of seeing patients who don't talk spontaneously and look to me to guide the entire session, then answer any questions I can think of in single sentences. These can be long sessions.
2. The chaos of patients who simply don't show up or who repeatedly cancel at the last minute. Especially if the reason is that it's the only time they could get an appointment with their hairdresser.

And the Number One thing I don't like about being a psychiatrist.....

1. Talking about unpaid bills, which I have on ocassion let go much longer than I should.

Top 25 Shrink Rap Posts for 2006

Here are the Top 25 posts for 2006, counting down from #25 to #1 (by page views, per Google Analytics). Of course, the older articles are more likely to make it to this list, as well as those which were well-linked (like #1, which has a link on Wikipedia). For what it's worth, the main blog page had 27,809 page views, with 9991 "absolute unique visitors" (I'm sure we had at least 9 more prior to installing Analytics, so I'm callin' it 10,000).

50 Top-rated 2006 Psychiatric Journal Articles, per MDLinx

I don't know how useful this is, as I never rank the list of emailed articles I get weekly from MDLinx, so I'm not sure how many others do. That being said, here is a list of the 50 top-rated psych articles for 2006.
