Hmm, he was already seeing a psychiatrist.

Personally, I am really sick of these types of discussions because of the inference that people with mental illness are violent. Also, every time a shooting like this happens, there is always an outcry to start involuntary committing everyone who might possibly be dangerous when their only crime is being different.

Instead, why isn't there focus on the gun laws that enable extremely easy access to them?

Finally, is it possible that some criminals are just evil and there isn't an easy explanation? Just saying.

  2. I'm with AA. And can we wait until some facts are know before we start speaking of Holmes as though we KNOW he is mentally ill?

I'm begging you Roy: please wrap your remarks in reams of caveats. We don't know Jack about this guy's mental state.

  3. AA and Rob:

The Shrink Rappers have definitely had conversations about this and Roy is a cautious and conscientious doc.

You can see my thoughts about this on Clinical Psychiatry News this week.

  4. Clink, I read your post and I thought it was spot-on. Strong work!

I would amend your comments about Keith Ablow, however.

He may have been judicious in his writing on July 24. But by July 25 he was violating the Goldwater Rule by using the Colorado shootings to stump for early intervention in MI. The strong implication Ablow articulates is that Holmes is mentally ill.
