For someone already inclined to think going to therapy for what they perceive are minor problems is self-indulgent, a shirnk who sits there and doesn't say much leaves to much to the patient's imagination. You could argue its therapuetic but how do you trust and open up to someone you think is tired of listening to your tired stuff?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-81260673850470131672009-03-13T03:00:00.000-04:002009-03-13T03:00:00.000-04:00If my therapist talked more I might've stayed with...If my therapist talked more I might've stayed with it. I accept I'm not a big talker so this petty staredown look-how-good-a-shrink-I-am bullshit doesn't impress me. If I wanted to pay $300 an hour for uncomfortable silences I'd give myself a wedgie and go destroy library books.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-61457957024460909722009-02-15T23:27:00.000-05:002009-02-15T23:27:00.000-05:00Actually - I have a question about silence... well...Actually - I have a question about silence... well, sorta about silence.

If you have a hunch about a diagnosis of a patient - but your not sure, do you share this hunch with the patient, or stay quiet about it until you are completely 110% sure? Are you open with your patient about the diagnostic process (particularly in more difficult cases, or situations where things change over time), or do you let your thoughts gather and then when the time is right you share what needs to be shared?

Just curious.Rachhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11897760883997811787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-92025017461837189332009-02-15T13:21:00.000-05:002009-02-15T13:21:00.000-05:00I wish my shrink would talk more. I don't necessarily need to do it in front of him.

You have more competition in the talkativeness department than you realize, myself included.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-45637277405588707652009-02-15T05:47:00.000-05:002009-02-15T05:47:00.000-05:00I was the silent patient, this week. It's something that rhymes w/that.

I just up and left my husband to make a call at the time i was sposed to be there, I refused to get out of bed.

er, um, no, not asking for treatment, just saying I was kinda the reverse of your title, hee.

Sorta. It struck me as funny.

But everything is striking me oddly, these days.

Oh, and um please forgive me, I'm not exactly myself and my thoughts are MOST definitely disorganized (#1 most hated symptom of this transition!! ugh).

well, much more so than usual, heh.

and yar, I'm reporting to my shrink, just so ya'll know. Not that I need to report that to you as docs, but saying it as potentially concerned friends who happen to know a little something about the subject.

ANYWAY.

Hope you feel better soon.

Wanders off looking for a twinkie and wishing my EQ toons were twinked . . . .Sarebearhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09208596053319110470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-72036635190905935712009-02-13T17:44:00.000-05:002009-02-13T17:44:00.000-05:00Hi,Hope you are feeling better soon, have just bee...Hi,

Hope you are feeling better soon, have just been setting up my own blog, there is one pic you may like to borrow when the fish subject comes up again! I want him to understand me and to explain me to myself. I wish he would talk more--or, maybe I don't hear him?

I was really thinking of how closed-off he is and his far-away look. Is he even paying attention? How do you know if your shrink is listening?

It is so easy to make excuses for him. He's old, I'm boring, I'm difficult--but for $200 an appointment, I need something in return.

I think now that what I really need are friends. The psychiatrist is just what he is--a disinterested bystander.

I feel so alone.

LilyDrivingMissMollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11476761316928942301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-41818834401020973922009-02-13T09:17:00.000-05:002009-02-13T09:17:00.000-05:00It's not laryngitis that you have. Your patients wish you didn't talk so much and they have somehow communicated this wish and you picked up on that and now you can't talk. So it is a form of hysteria--kind of.
Soon your patients will feel guilty that the wish came true and your voice will return.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-9684134241116327502009-02-13T02:08:00.000-05:002009-02-13T02:08:00.000-05:00I don't think it would bother me if my psychiatris...I don't think it would bother me if my psychiatrist did not talk for a few sessions. I LIKE the fact that he's a "talking" therapist, but sometimes he talks too much, also. Sometimes he leads too strongly and I can't get out what's really bothering me. Some things I STILL have not told him after all this time. Some space, perhaps a LOT of space and I might finally get all that stuff out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-34331619609828896892009-02-13T00:47:00.000-05:002009-02-13T00:47:00.000-05:00make that, didactic.make that, didactic.shrink on the couchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13271891110211081990noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-63894912772519665202009-02-13T00:46:00.000-05:002009-02-13T00:46:00.000-05:00Yeah, I enjoyed this post. But it's good to challenge the patient.. who am I kidding? challenge myself ... to allow for more unstructured patient talk time. see where it leads.shrink on the couchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13271891110211081990noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26666124.post-79366950839960977292009-02-12T22:42:00.000-05:002009-02-12T22:42:00.000-05:00"I think I'm probably in the top ten percent for t..."I think I'm probably in the top ten percent for talkativeness in the general population"

Ha!
